History of TAMKO – A Roofing Product Powerhouse
TAMKO Building Products, Inc. is one of the nation’s largest independent manufacturers of residential roofing products (this includes Heritage asphalt shingles and MetalWorks steel shingles), decking and railing products, water protection, cement, exterior cladding, steel shields, roof underlayment’s, cement and coatings and more.
TAMKO Roofing Products was founded in Joplin, Missouri, in 1944, and soon became a profitable company, having to construct manufacturing plants throughout southern states to keep up with the demand for their products.
Over the next 75 years, TAMKO has grown from one small site in an old railroad shed in Southwest Missouri into one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of roofing, with over 20 facilities throughout the United States, an array of building products, and national distribution.

For the next 33 years, Ethelmaes husband led the TAMKO Company through its expansion, with TAMKO adding manufacturing plants in Phillipsburg, Kansas; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; Knoxville, Tennessee; Frederick, Maryland; and Dallas, Texas. TAMKOs business and its footprint has expanded at a tremendous rate, growing from a single roofing facility in Joplin, MO to become one of the nation’s largest manufacturers of asphalt shingles.
At TAMKO, all our roofing shingles, underlayment and construction products are backed by a brand name recognized for its rich history, core values of honesty and integrity, quality products and processes, credibility with construction professionals, and support to its communities. Today, TAMKO remains headquartered in Joplin — the same location where TAMKO first began — and operates additional manufacturing plants and warehouse facilities throughout the country to service its customers roofing and siding products.
